I spent today photographing a beautiful couple in traditional hanbok, capturing their story against some of Seoul’s most timeless backdrops.


The colors of their hanbok blended beautifully—so much so that it felt like the outfits were meant to be a pair.

Simply strolling through the palace in hanbok is already photogenic on its own. And when a couple holds hands or starts talking softly to each other, their expressions become even more genuine and effortless.

When I ask couples to walk and talk, many of them end up whispering or mumbling because they suddenly become aware of the camera. That’s why I always remind them to speak out loud—real conversation makes all the difference.


It doesn’t have to be anything special. It can be as simple as chatting about how breakfast tasted this morning, how the weather feels, or what mood they’re in at that moment.


I gently guide them into these small, everyday conversations because those tiny exchanges bring out the most natural expressions.

And of course, my sessions always include a bit of running. Once they start jogging lightly, their breathing loosens up and the tension melts away.


It’s a simple trick, but it works every time—people forget about the camera and start moving more naturally.


That said, I don’t make anyone run from the very start. We build up to it—walk first, get used to the camera, then jog a little once the tension softens.

Especially with the galrae-style skirt she wore—a design that opens at the front, unlike a typical traditional hanbok—you can create much more dynamic and elegant photos.


When she holds the split outer layer and moves even slightly, the lines of the fabric flow beautifully, making the whole scene come alive.

Since the shoot began after 4 p.m., the sun was already on its way down, and that late-afternoon light softened beautifully. You could see how the gentle glow fell across the couple, making the scene feel even more serene and romantic.


Once the hour-long shoot was finished, I shared the unedited previews later that night for them to choose from. They were both genuinely pleased and said they loved how everything turned out.
